Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) — French President Francois Hollande
says the European Central Bank has a role in tackling Europe’s
economic sluggishness, including low inflation and weak demand.
* Hollande says ECB decisions are due in September and
European Union governments will address the EU’s economic
challenges at summits in late October and in November
* “Everywhere inflation has reached a historic low, so there
is a European problem that can be characterized by
insufficient demand,” he tells reporters in Brussels after
an EU summit
* France faces “indispensable reforms,” some of which
haven’t been done for 10 to 12 years, in order to boost
competitiveness, Hollande says
* On foreign policy, he says the EU is showing “firmness” by
drawing up tougher sanctions against Russia over its
encroachment in Ukraine, with new draft measures from the
European Commission due within a week
* Tougher penalties against Russia won’t necessarily require
an EU summit to be approved, Hollande says, citing the
ability of national ministers or diplomats to give the green
light
* He says Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko made no request
for arms aid at the Brussels summit
* Hollande casts doubt on the wisdom of any arms deliveries by
EU nations to Ukraine and stresses the need for a cease-fire
in the country
